AN 18th century Brussels tapestry more than doubled its estimate to make one of the top prices of £6,600 at a Mullens sale last Monday evening.

The tapestry, depicting the visit of the Queen of Sheba to Solomon, was chased by two telephone bidders from the trade. However, it was eventually knocked down to a private buyer in the room.

An English walnut rosewood and marquetry side cabinet, dating from around 1880, also made £6,600, just beating its top estimate of £6,500.

A painting by the 19th century artist, Joseph Wopfner was sold for £5,000 to a German trade buyer. Lot 1, a set of 12 Victorian mahogany chairs, made £3,800; a Victorian walnut credenza sold for £3,700; a mahogany eased baby grand piano by Astor fetched £3,600; a pair of 19th century French bombe commodes made £2,800; a Victorian walnut card table, dating from around 1860, sold for £2,700; a pair of demi lune mahogany side tables made £2,600, as did lot 226, a set of eight Victorian dining chairs which had been expected to sell for £1,200-£1,600. A William IV mahogany fourposter bed sold for £1,900.
