Sturdy daintiness

This antique mahogany and brass-inlaid drum table manages to be sturdy despite its dainty appearance, the latter arising from the pair of hooped legs raised on brass castors; the main body of the table has three frieze drawers below an oval leather-covered surface. This lot features in the first antiques and fine art auction being held this autumn at the salerooms of Sheppard's in Durrow, Co Laois, and is expected to make £2,000-£3,000. The same estimate is given to a pair of very handsome 19th century Louis XVI-style giltwood fauteuils, as well as an early 19th century oval neo-classical mahogany and inlay silver table and an Edwardian mahogany display cabinet.

However, among the almost 500 lots, there are items likely to make both more and less than this figure. Among the former is a set of eight 19th century Chippendale-style ribbon-back dining chairs (£8,000-£12,000), a George III mahogany and satinwood-inlaid gentleman's wardrobe (£4,000-£6,000) and a Victorian mahogany D-end dining table (£3,500-£4,500). Meanwhile, less expensive lots run from a George III mahogany side table to an Edwardian oak-framed bevelled mirror (£250-£350). The auction takes place on Monday, starting at 2 p.m.
