The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer

Project Cube

THE ADVENTURES of Alvin Sputnik is a miniature tragedy of epic proportion. A blend of animation, live action and puppetry, Tim Watt’s ingenious and infectiously optimistic show creates an unlikely hero from a sad- eyed, newly bereaved, lollipop-headed widower, who descends into the Earth’s frozen core in attempt to save the world from environmental ruin.

The animation is part-Pixar, part-Tim Burton, and the transitions between the pre-recorded and live sequences are seamless. (Watts himself takes care of all the special effects with well-practised professionalism; the show has been touring since 2009.) From the ironic score – drawn from influences as various as Danny Elfman and Mika – to the magical use of miner's lamps, The Adventures of Alvin Sputnikeffectively brings together a sober message about environmental destruction with a heart-warming romance. It is an imaginative wonder that adults and children alike will warm to.
