COLLECTORS from Australia, Canada and Japan competed with Irish and English dealers and private buyers at the Whyte's sale of coins, banknotes medals and tokens last week.

Among the most interesting buys were: a Spanish American silver dollar countermarked by Castlecomer Colliery for 5s 5d, which fetched £2,400, way over its top estimate of £1,500; a 1944 GAA All-Ireland hurling gold medal (won by Cork), which fetched £1,000; and a 1972 GAA All-Ireland football medal (won by Offaly), £950.
