Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band

You want cheese? You got it. This wasn't gorgonzola, but Gorgonzilla: the BIG cheese.

You want cheese? You got it. This wasn't gorgonzola, but Gorgonzilla: the BIG cheese.

Ringo Starr and some of his famous chums, Peter Framp ton, Jack Bruce, Gary Brooker, Simon Kirke and Mark Rivera (who he?), joined together last night to plunder their respective back catalogues. The result was a woefully uneven set that ranged from the spooky (a superb rendition of Procul Harum's A Salty Dog) to the absurd - the remainder of the gig.

With the exception of Rivera, each ageing pop star took a turn beneath the spotlight. Peter Frampton faithfully sang Show Me The Way and Baby I Love Your Way. Jack Bruce massacred Cream's Sunshine Of Your Love and I Feel Free. Gary Brooker, the band's sole saving grace, played A Whiter Shade Of Pale and Conquista- dor. Simon Kirke slaughtered Alright Now. As for the sprightly Ringo, he sang Love Me Do, Yellow Submarine, With A Little Help From My Friends and other songs too dreadful to mention in a family newspaper.

Easy listening for superannuated rock fans? Undoubtedly. An excuse for a millionaire and his mates to have a very wobbly knees-up in front of a thoroughly undiscerning audience? Absolutely. Harmless good fun, a high-powered cabaret embarrassment or an authentic run through past glories? Take your pick. And then hit the nearest former Beatle with it.
