The opulent genius of Italian Baroque will be celebrated in what promises to be one of the most significant music performances held anywhere this year. The Italian master organist, Luigi Tagliavini (pictured right), plays a magnificent programme in Christ Church Cathedral on June 22nd, featuring works arranged by Corelli for the organ, as well as Vivaldi's Concerto in D minor Op IV.
Alessandro Scarlatti's Toccata in A major features, as do three sonatas by his son, Domenico. Bernardo Pasquini is represented by his Toccata in D minor, Variations in G minor, Pastorale in G major, Four Arias and the Sonata in C major. Even by the high standards of the rich and imaginative Pipeworks Festival programme - also offering in its closing gala concert a performance of Janácek's exuberant Glagolitic Mass (1926), sung in Old Church Slavonic, and an orchestral transcription of Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, as well as Rossini as he intended to be heard - Tagliavini's performance is the chance of a lifetime to hear a singular master whose musical artistry is brilliantly served by his intuitive understanding of the music he has devoted his life to playing.
