Directed by James Mangold. Starring Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Ben Foster, Peter Fonda 15 cert

Mangold's remake of the 1957 Delmer Daves western stars Bale as a struggling, mild-mannered rancher determined to bring in a notorious criminal (played by Crowe). The action sequences are vigorously staged in classical western style, although the movie falters in its resolution. - MD

THE BRAVE ONE

Directed by Neil Jordan. Starring Jodie Foster, Terrence Howard, Naveen Andrews, Nicky Katt, Mary Steenburgen 18 cert

One of Jordan's rare Hollywood productions, this New York thriller casts Foster as a radio DJ turning vigilante after she and her fiancé are brutally attacked in Central Park. Despite its arresting early scenes and committed performances from Foster and Howard, the film raises more questions than it answers, and the screenplay is bogged down in unlikely contrivances. - MD

SHOOT 'EM UP

Directed by Michael Davis. Starring Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti, Monica Belluccci, Stephen McHattie 18 cert

The firepower kicks in within minutes in this frenetic thriller starring a deadpan and athletic Owen as an Englishman in New York, where he delivers a baby during a shoot-out and has to protect the child from an army of assassins. The over-the-top action sequences trigger more laughter than tension.

SUPERBAD

This pocket Odyssey from the team behind Knocked Up concerns the attempts of three young fellows to secure a carload of beer for the coolest party of the year. Vomiting and violence follow. Wittier and less misogynistic than its predecessor, the picture, issued here in an pointlessly extended version, discovers endlessly hilarious ways of behaving badly.

DISTURBIA

Directed by DJ Caruso. Starring Shia LaBeouf, David Morse, Sarah Roemer, Carrie-Anne Moss 15 cert

In a modern spin on Rear Window, a troubled teen (LaBeouf), who is under house arrest, suspects that his neighbour (Morse) is a serial killer. Director Caruso is certainly not the inheritor of Hitchcock's mantle, although he handles the suspense sequences efficiently in this diverting yarn.

DELIVER US FROM EVIL

Directed by Amy Berg 15 cert

Horribly powerful documentary examining the events surrounding the horrific abuse of dozens of American children by Oliver O'Grady, an Irish priest. The information about the hierarchy's complacency is properly depressing, but the film is most notable for the astonishingly deluded contributions from O'Grady himself. Essential viewing.
