Youth Lagoon: Wondrous Bughouse

Trevor Powers 's first strike as Youth Lagoon, The Year Of Hibernation , was a genuinely great debut full of enthralling, majestic sounds and songs. The good news is that that was no fluke, and Wondrous Bughouse is a superbly pitched, exquisitely realised set of woozy, experimental and off-kilter tracks from the Idaho native. As with his debut, Wondrous Bughouse deals with Powers's own psychological issues and notions, from the album title ("bughouse" is slang for a psychiatric institution) to lyrics about delusion and death. Musically, Powers has moved onwards and upwards, and the new broad sweep shows the magnetism of his layered ambience and psychedelic explorations on Mute , Dropla and Third Dystopia .
