MacKenzie Scott is Torres, a Nashville-based singer with a voice to knock you for six and a bunch of songs to match. As she runs through a gamut of experiences and musings, Scott sounds like an old hand at emotional musical hard-wiring, which isn’t bad going for a 22-year-old on her debut. Her sparse torch-song blues, sculpted wordcraft and heartbreaking delivery ensure there’s never a dull moment. While there are occasional nods to PJ Harvey, Karen Dalton and Cat Power, Scott’s way with words stop most of those comparisons in their tracks. November Baby is made for relistening, a song that reveals more sad, tragic pen pictures every time around. Moon & Back and When Winter’s Over are equally spine-tingling, both dealing with serious, tumultuous, hurtful themes (a mother gives up her baby in the former) with tact and sympathy. twitter.com/torreslovesyou Download: November Baby, Moon & Back
