Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings certainly know what the people want, and they've built a successful career on the back of wham-bam brassy retro-soul and gusty hollering. Give the People What They Want comes on the back of a difficult year for the singer, who was diagnosed with cancer, and the release was pushed back from last summer so she could get treatment. As we've come to expect from Jones and the Dap Kings, it's a set of no-holds-barred, defiantly old-school, sweaty soul and raging funk, the Dap Kings' horns punctuating Jones's powerful, mesmeric vocals. Retreat and Stranger to My Happiness are real contenders, while the manner in which Jones deals dismissively with subjects on Now I See and People Don't Get What They Deserve are things of some wonder.
