Sam Smith pulls the masses | Electric Picnic

Pop music is popular, shocker

Sam Smith arrives in Stradbally laden with Grammys and platinum discs. But two years ago, as he explains from the stage, he walked out in front of no one in a tent at the Picnic. No such nightmare tonight, as he easily has the biggest crowd of the festival so far. Smith’s powerful and saccharine soul has some great tunes in its arsenal, and while there’s a unimaginative nature to his performance, some of them really soar, providing some massive sing-a-long moments. His voice is ridiculously on point, and almost overrides anything lacking in the set. ‘Money On My Mind’ is a standout highlight . A professional job, but the cruise ship Winehouse cover proves that Amy’s tunes are better left to the woman herself.
