Ryan Sheridan: Monaghan man off the mark

Moody backdrop and overbearing strobe lighting fail to cut the mustard

Stars:**

He’s come a long way from his days of busking, but that’s not far enough for Ryan Sheridan. The man from Monaghan in the baseball cap now has a full band behind him rather than a lone percussionist thumping a box, but his generic pop-rock songs are still too blah to make a lasting impression.

When you’re competing for punters with Two Door Cinema Club’s main stage set, an amusingly moody backdrop and overbearing strobe lighting just don’t cut the mustard.

The result is an Electric Arena that’s barely a third full, and while a cover of The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army temporarily sends a current of life through the crowd, it’s short-lived. An earlier time slot on a smaller stage may have made a difference, but them’s the breaks.
