Caila Thompson-Hannant has worked to get out from under the shadow of Grimes for quite some time. You can understand the comparison, seeing as both Canadians specialise in spiky, high-flying keyboard-fronted pop. But the tweaks and wobbles on the Montreal woman's album are of a much different, more classical bearing than anything from Grimes. Thompson-Hannant's earlier EPs were signposts in this direction. Tracks such as Salty Tear and Lone Wolf are bursting with occasionally remarkable passages, as her DIY pop creates something robust, smart and presentable. Thompson-Hannant is fond of fuzzy beats, kooky r'n'b and off-kilter hooks, making for a highly listenable and often action-packed affair. With Being, Thompson-Hannant seems to firmly knows her own mind; this is merely a preview of what's to come down the road. soundcloud. com/mozartssister
