Even the most unimaginative soul wouldn't find it difficult to envision how a supergroup comprising members of Mogwai, Slowdive and Editors might sound. The debut album by Minor Victories offers few surprises, but those with even a passing interest in those bands will find plenty to absorb. Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite adds swirling texture to these sluggish, churning songs while Slowdive vocalist Rachel Goswell's dreamy, meditative voice lightens the heavy tone of A Hundred Ropes and The Thief. Folk Arp is a highlight, its delicate, pastoral intro building to an intense climax, as is the percussive, string-laden Breaking My Light.

It's an album that is easier to admire than it is to love - but shoegaze fans will sink into a blissfully agitated reverie. minor-victories.com
