Antonio Mazzoni was a mid-18th-century composer of the Baroque. Well known in his lifetime, he had the distinction of being one of the examiners at Mozart's admission tests for the Accademia filharmonica in 1770. Antigono was commissioned (but never performed) for the Opera do Tejo in Lisbon, which opened in March 1755 and destroyed seven months later in an earth-quake. The opera's plot, setting out amorous shenanigans involving the King of Macedonia, is classic baroque, but the orchestral writing is advanced for its period, with longer melodic phrases and virtuoso passages. The music is elegant, and the live performance here does it justice. dynamic.it Download: Overture, Contro il destin
