Artist: Wells Cathedral Choir, Matthew Owens, Jonthan Vaughn, Judith Bingham
Genre: Classical
Label: Hyperion

This is a disc of music written from an insider's perspective. Judith Bingham (born 1952) established herself as a composer in the 1970s, but later chose to follow a dual career. She was a mezzo soprano with the BBC Singers from 1983 to 1996 before leaving to concentrate full-time on composition. Bingham has an acute ear for choral effectiveness, but her music for the Anglican tradition doesn't essay the honeyed niceness of a John Rutter or the heart-on-sleeve formulas of Karl Jenkins. And, as Andrew Stewart's note suggests, it may well challenge "the often cosy and conservative tastes of Choral Evensong addicts". This is music of uncertainty rather than of sure, clear answers. The way Bingham ends pieces is alone enough to tell you that. url.ie/4qdb
