Fatima Al Qadiri – Brute: a chilling soundscape of a world in conflict

Genre: Electronic
Label: Hyperdub

Brute is where Fatima Al Qadiri takes a long look at the world around her and finds plenty which disturbs her.

In her past solo and collaborative work, the Senegal-born, Kuwait-raised and Berlin-based artist has shown a great inquisitiveness about perceptions and diversity. Such attributes are deployed here to zone in on political protests such as Occupy Wall Street, activism of every stripe and the growing police industrial complex.

Al Qadiri’s sound design uses field recordings from protest marches and police scanners to create a chilling, menacing listen.

Tracks such as Curfew and 10-34 are as claustrophobic and uncomfortable as the real-world situations which have inspired them, with Al Qadiri's inventive, abstract blend of synths and bass amplifying the unease of a world caught between rage and despair. fatimaalqadiri.com
