The Cloudmakers Trio with Ralph Alessi

Every note counts in vibraphonist Jim Hart's Cloudmakers Trio. The combination of the trio (vibes, bass and drums) with much- admired US trumpeter Ralph Alessi makes for an uncluttered, open-textured sort of music in which every instrument makes a distinct and discernible contribution to what is nonetheless an unusual and very integrated group sound. Captured here during the white heat of a 2010 UK tour, this is a determinedly creative acoustic group from the heart of the jazz tradition, willing to let the music happen, not afraid to step off the charts and discover new spaces: Hart's fluid playing sets the tone, literally, with a combination of lithe melodic lines and lush, ringing chords; bassist Michael Janisch and drummer Dave Smith are tight and responsive, brimming with energy; and over them, Alessi is a master of subtlety, crafting thoughtful solos that draw it all together. jimhart.co.uk
