One For All

Incorrigible Jazz Legacy ***

The models for this seasoned New York sextet are the hard boppers of Blakey's Messengers and the Horace Silver bands. However, this throwback to the 1950s and Blue Note is more polished (the band has been together for 13 years) but less edgy than their inspirations. Despite that, One for All come closest to the feel of the source when these influences are most directly evoked by the band members' originals. On Blues for Jose, Back to Backand So Soon, the sextet – Eric Alexander (tenor), Jim Rotondi (trumpet/ flugelhorn), Steve Davis (trombone), David Hazeltine (piano), John Webber (bass) and Joe Farnsworth (drums) – plays with persuasive verve and skill. Coltrane, too, is behind Davis's Spirit Waltzand the harmonic obstacle course of Alexander's Incorrigible, negotiated with almost dismissive ease. No surprises, but much solace for fans of the idiom.
