Cashier No 9

They've been quietly simmering away for the last few years, but Cashier No 9 are about to hit boiling point. The Belfast five-piece's debut is an expertly paced record that doffs its cap to everyone from The Beach Boys to Teenage Fanclub via Super Furry Animals, but finds its own quirky niche thanks to the warm blanket of David Holmes's Phil Spector-esque production. Dreamy, swirling indie-pop infuses Oh Pityand the Beatles-like Good Bye Friend, while there's just the right number of brooding scene-setters amid the chiming melodic standouts. True, the tone may be very similar throughout, but the cosy glow that emanates from these 10 easygoing tracks means that you'll be back for second helpings, nonetheless. A strong contender for Irish album of the year. See cashierno9.com
