The annual introductory art appreciation course organised by the Irish Auctioneers and Valuers Institute is due to start on Tuesday, 26th September. Aimed at fine art enthusiasts and collectors, the course offers an introduction to all aspects of antiques and decorative arts over a series of 10 lectures held every second Tuesday in the IAVI's premises at 38 Merrion Square.

At the end of the series, participants are invited to bring items to find out more about their provenance and value from experts.

Among the lecturers are Brian Coyle and James O'Halloran of the James Adam Salerooms, Fonsie Mealy of Mealy's, Douglas Bennett, Denis Drum and Michael Jordan of O'Reilly Auction Rooms.

The specific subjects covered include Georgian and Victorian furniture, 19th and 20th century Irish art, books and periodicals, pottery and porcelain, silver and jewellery. The course costs £160 per participant and further information is available from the IAVI, 01-6611794.
