The 40-minute non-verbal show, Annabelle's Star, at the Ark, offers young audiences a theatrical experience in striking contrast to the usual Christmas offerings.

Directed by Raymond Keane, performed by Judith Ryan and with a strong original score by Conor Mitchell, it was first staged at Belfast's Young at Art Festival in 2002.

Annabelle is a little girl all alone in the world who is visited by two stars in the sky (representing her deceased parents). These stars send her magical gifts which symbolise aspects of her life and help her come to terms with her loss. Keane admits that it is a sad show, "but it's very beautiful and there are lots of joyous moments. The end is uplifting because by facing her sadness, Annabelle finds happiness".

Pitched at children aged four to eight, Annabelle's Star aims to give children a chance to explore their darker fears in a safe environment.
