Virtua Tennis 4: World Tour

Some years ago a friend asked me the rhetorical question – do we need more than four reggae songs? The same question may apply to tennis games. A few bells and whistles aside, there’s little that a new game can add to the strangely crowded genre.

In fairness, this version can be played with Move or Kinect controllers. And the bells and whistles are quite nice – you can customise appearance (they let me add a beard and long hair, but not my trademark paunch). The world champion mode allows you to train, meet fans (as dull as it sounds) and travel to different locations.

And what about the actual gameplay? It’s reasonably fun; responsive and fast-paced, but it does lack nuance and variety.

Virtua Tennis 4, from its low-fi onscreen text to its 1990s trance music will provide short-term entertainment, but ultimately it's nothing you have not seen before.
