Since their Louden Up Now album in 2004, the punctuation crazies with three exclamation marks as their name have refined and perfected the fine art of funky, punky dance music. !!! are always at their best when the grooves are taut and the playing creates a rolling barrage of fired-up slippery sounds tied together with a 21st-century party sensibility. There were times on Louden Up Now when they sounded just like every other New York City mob who had got their hands on a secondhand set of cowbells and hired a brass section for a half-day studio session. But Myth Takes has a daring width to its sound. Both Heart of Hearts and All My Heroes Are Weirdos jump right out of their skin with a new sense of purpose and vision, while the funk-metal clamour of Bend Over has lessons galore for other camp followers. www.chkchkchk.com
