Electorate `not convinced'

The Green Party and the Right to Bail campaign in Cork both expressed disappointment at the outcome of the referendum

The Green Party and the Right to Bail campaign in Cork both expressed disappointment at the outcome of the referendum. But Mr Dan Boyle, a Green councillor, said the low turnout showed the Government had failed to convince people the change in the bail laws was essential.

A solicitor and member of the Right to Bail group, Mr Charlie Hennessy, was also disappointed with the result but said they must now ensure the Government introduced the measures necessary to stem the growth of crime. "They have claimed this change in the bail laws is just one of the steps they intend taking. They must be held to this now," he added.

Mr Paul Bradford TD, Fine Gael's director for the referendum in Munster, said the result was a good one for the Government and especially for the Minister for Justice.
