The picturesque hamlet of Bofeenaun, Co Mayo may not be synonymous with world-class classical music, but for one weekend every summer Mayo Summer Classics brings a little bit of culture to the tiny village.

The series began in 2004 as a one-night event organised by local Tom Rowland, whose brother-in- law, Iain King, is a respected Scottish violinist. Over the years, the demand for tickets has been so high that the organising committee extended it to two nights. It will take place on July 16th and 18th this year.

“I think what makes the concerts in Bofeenaun so unique and popular is that the whole set up,” said Rowland. “The ambience we’ve created is very informal, designed to make the music more accessible.”

This year’s guests are Korean-born, Juilliard- trained cellist Su-a Lee, pianist Caroline Clemmow, and King. mayosummerclassics.com
