Some people, it is true, can’t draw a square, never mind a still life, but there are plenty of people with a bit of artistic talent who can really improve their skills with practice and good tuition. To that end, there are some excellent classes available for serious enthusiasts as well as the more curious beginner.
At one end of the spectrum is the Rossnaree School of Art, founded by artist Aisling Law in 2007 after she spent a year studying in Florence. Located in newly built studios in the grounds of Rossnaree House near Slane, Co Meath, the school is committed to the painting and drawing methods of the old masters.
This summer there will be three new courses led by RHA portrait painter James Hanley, award-winning Dublin-based painter Joe Dunne, and Barcelona-based painter Daniel Scott. Florence-trained tutor Gearóid Hayes will return to the RSA to teach the drawing and painting techniques of the old masters. See rossnaree.ie or call 041-9820975 for more details.
For the more casual learner, City Life Drawingis a weekly drawing group held from 7pm to 9pm every Tuesday night in Space54 Workshop Arts Centre, Smithfield, Dublin. It's a walk-in class, so there is no long-term commitment required, and all materials are provided.
