New car sales up by 34% in September

Sales continue to boom but consumers are buying fewer second-hand imported cars

The boom in new car sales continued in September, as sales rose by 34 per cent compared the same month in 2013 to 4, 376. However, the month saw a further decline in the sale of second-hand imported cars.

Overall, there were 86,894 new private cars licensed in the year to the end of September 2014, a rise of 30.5 per cent compared to the same period in 2013.

Volkswagen was the most popular brand of new car, with 592 sales during the month, followed by Toyota (376), Ford (354) and Renault (323). On an annual basis, Volkswagen is again the most popular car, with 10,571 sales, followed by Toyota (9,214), Ford (8,657) and Hyundai (7,174).

When it comes to second-hand imported cars, licensed for the first time, sales fell by 7.6 per cent to 4,376. On an annual basis, sales of used cars advanced by 9.9 per cent to 41,134.
