Dublin got a jobs boost today with the news that two international firms are to create more than 50 jobs in the coming months.

AOL Global Operations said today it would create 35 software engineering jobs over the next 12 months at its Dublin Development Centre as the company expands its digital content, advertising services. The company currently employs 155 people in Dublin.

The jobs, which will be both senior and junior positions, are aimed at candidates with Java, Ruby on Rails, Erlang and C++ in web services and web applications.

Aengus McClean, senior VP of AOL's Global Advertising Technologies said it was a very exciting time for the firm and its Dublin operations.

"Through innovation and creativity, AOL has raised the bar and set the standard for high quality content on the internet and we are presenting new recruits with exciting projects with global reach that allow them to apply their technical creativity, develop their skills and build a successful and fulfilling career," he said.

Separately, German car rental firm Sixt rent a car said it will create 23 jobs in Dublin following a new franchise deal with a Dun Laoghaire based rental firm.

Family owned County Car Rentals, which opened in 1952 under the management of the Loughran family, will operate under the Sixt brand. Offices have been rebranded with the Sixt rent a car corporate image, and the range of cars offered to customers now includes premium brands such as BMW and Audi.

As part of the deal, 11 jobs have been created at the Sixt head office in Dublin, and an additional 12 staff will be recruited to work in reservations, customer service and administration, and rental agents in the coming months.

Managing director Sixt rent a car Ireland Bernard Loughran said the partnership was part of County Car Rentals’ strategy to expand its business.

“This partnership gives us an opportunity to attract new tourism and corporate business from strong economic regions including Germany and Austria,” he said.

Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore said the operation highlighted “all that is good about the Irish family-run business” and the company had gone from strength to strength.
