Tech firm nets €16.5m South Korea contract

A Belfast company which enjoyed a starring role in the blockbuster film Titanic has won a £10 million sterling (€16.5 million) contract to supply its technology to South Korea.

APT, Audio Processing Technology, will provide intellectual property software to Open Solution in South Korea which will in turn use it to develop a new chip.

The consumer giant Samsung will manufacture the chip.

Audio Processing Technology won the contract after participating in a recent trade mission organised by Trade International, the Industrial Development Board's export arm to South Korea and Taiwan.

APT was set up more than 10 years ago by a group of audio researchers at Queen's University under the QUBIS umbrella and was subsequently acquired by Solid State Logic based in Oxford.

The company's digital sound technology has been used in a number of award-winning movies including Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park and Schindler's List.
