The world of automated teller machines (ATM) is all go, according to a recent survey by Bank of Ireland (BoI). The bank says £66 million (€83 million) a week is withdrawn from machines throughout the State.

BoI has 502 machines providing an instant withdrawal facility for the 950,000 transactions each week. Almost 94 of these take place each minute with an average of £65 per transaction.

The busiest day for ATM activity is Friday between 12.30 p.m. and 1.30 p.m. Automatic tellers are used most frequently (41 per cent) by 18- to 25-year-old customers, says the survey.

Rate of use in Dublin is nearly double the activity seen elsewhere.
