DELL Computers continues to grow strongly with sales from its Limerick operation into European markets reaching $467 million (£300 million) in the firsts quarter to the end of April, 34 per cent ahead of the same period last a year.

The company now employs 1,400 people in a manufacturing plant in Limerick and in a sales and support centre in Bray, Co Wicklow, and its Irish managing director, Mr Tim McCarthy, said its Irish operations would continue to grow in line with sales.

The group reported a 33 per cent rise in worldwide after tax profit for the first quarter of its year to April 28th. Net income rose to $82 million (£52.5 million) with revenue rising by 44 per cent to $1.6 billion (£1.05 billion).

Mr Michael Dell, chairman and chief executive, said the strong results showed the efficiency of the company's direct selling approach to the customer.

Mr McCarthy said that sales in Europe performed well in the first quarter and were slightly ahead of the peak sales fourth quarter last year, providing a good outlook for the year as a whole.
