Total revenues at NTL, now Ireland's third-largest cable operator, rose to $360.3 million, compared to $154.3 million, boosted by a string of acquisitions.

Nasdaq-listed NTL said customer penetration rose to 46 per cent from 40.6 per cent, excluding acquisitions.

In Britain, third-ranked NTL leapfrogged rival Telewest last month to buy the bulk of market leader Cable & Wireless Communications, confirming NTL's reputation as the most aggressive player in the British cable sector.

NTL received financial backing for the deal from France Telecom, which agreed to inject $5.5 billion (€5.24 million)into NTL, taking an initial 25 per cent stake which it can increase to 34 per cent after 2002.
