In another indication that she will take a strong "pro-competition" approach, the telecommunications regulator, Ms Etain Doyle, yesterday promised to place as few obstacles as possible in the way of telephone companies wanting to enter the Irish market from December.

In a report on her recent consultations with the industry, Ms Doyle said "sufficient but light-handed regulation" would best benefit consumers.
