Air France said yesterday that profits soared in the first quarter of its 2000/01 financial year, benefiting from a surge in passenger demand and the carrier's powerful alliance with Delta Air Lines. Operating profit - the most closely-watched results figure - rose 20.2 per cent to €185 million in the April-June period.

Air France bought out a controlling interest in CityJet earlier this year.
