O'Brien adds more mobile phone licences to lucrative collection

One More Thing: There's never a dull moment with Denis O'Brien

One More Thing:There's never a dull moment with Denis O'Brien. This week alone he has sold Dublin radio station FM104 to rival UTV for a chunky €52 million, and Highland Radio has also been placed on the blocks.

In the Americas, meanwhile, he's added another couple of mobile phone licences to his ever-expanding Digicel empire.

On Tuesday, Digicel was granted a licence in the British Virgin Islands, bringing to 24 the number of territories covered by his Caribbean mobile phone operation. O'Brien is planning an initial investment of $15 million for the group of islands, which enjoy a healthy tourism trade but have a population of just more than 23,000.

Forty-eight hours later, Digicel said it had won an auction for the fourth mobile phone licence in Honduras for $80 million.

Honduras has a population of 7.5 million. O'Brien is paying a chunky sum, given that there are three players already in the market.

The mobile penetration in the country, however, is just 38 per cent at present, probably due to the fact that about 80 per cent of the landscape is mountains.

It leaves plenty of scope for Digicel to attack the market with its well honed cut-price, pre-paid offering.

Digicel's success in the Caribbean has been built on the fact that it is prepared to put masts on the side of every hill and mountain, even in the remotest of areas, to get maximum coverage for its customers.

It also mops up all sponsorship opportunities to build brand awareness. Every football team in Haiti's top league is sponsored by Digicel. You'll even see the brand painted on rooftops.

Having cracked the Caribbean market, O'Brien now has his eyes firmly fixed on Central America.
