TECHNOLOGY stocks surged again yesterday, but most of the broad market was only slightly higher after giving back some of their early gains with bonds.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 29.26 points and closed at 5,564.74, jumping higher in the last half hour of trading after trailing lower from a gain of more than 50 points earlier in the session.

Advancing issues outnumbered declines by about 11 to seven on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1,471 up, 931 down and 741 unchanged.

NYSE volume totalled 393.98 million shares against 419.96 million in the previous session.

The NYSE's composite index rose 1.42 to 347.82, the Standard and Poor's 500 stock index rose 2.82 to 647.89, the Nasdaq composite index gained 12.42 to 1151.12, its third straight record close.

At the American Stock Exchange, the market value index set its fifth straight record, rising 1.49 to 587.37.
