Wall Street stocks bolted higher yesterday, boosted by falling interest rates as a strong confirmation of slowing US economic growth snuffed out fears of rapid inflation.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 85.08 points to close at 5,679.83, padding out a 160 point advance over the previous three sessions. The barometer of 30 big US companies has now snapped back by nearly 500 points from the depths of the market's steep sell off last month.

In NYSE trading, 2,106 issues rose, 540 fell and 576 were unchanged.

NYSE volume totalled 441.67 million shares, against 438.94 million last time.
