Prescription drug charges for medical card patients may have a detrimental impact elsewhere in Ireland’s healthcare system, a leading US academic has warned.

Prof Frank Lichtenberg of Columbia University in New York said yesterday that “there are reasons to be concerned” about some Government actions taken in relation to pharmaceuticals – for example, the drug charge of 50 cent per prescription item for medical card holders which was introduced last year.
