Germany's blue-chip shares tumbled in post-bourse computer trading yesterday following the Dow's dive after the US Federal Reserve chairman, Mr Alan Greenspan, said further US stock market gains were unrealistic.

Shares quickly dropped back below the 4,300 level they conquered this week as Mr Greenspan's remarks took their toll on US markets.

Weaker sentiment also chilled the Paris Bourse, with stock prices down by 1.32 per cent on the day.

The CAC-40 index was up by 0.53 per cent at the opening, then floated indecisively, only to end the day at 3,024.08 points.

Milan Mibtel: 15,517 (+39.85)

Italian shares pared gains to close lower yesterday, after rising as much as 2 per cent earlier.

The all-share Mibtel Index closed 0.5 per cent higher at 15,517, after rising as high as 15,748 amid optimism about a solution to Italy's political crisis.
