Online payment company Realex Payments is to open a new Dublin office, creating 50 new jobs.

Tasoieach Enda Kenny today officially opened the company's new office on Sir John Rogerson's Quay.

Founded in 2000 by former Ulster Bank employee Colm Lyon, Realex is headquartered in Dublin, and has offices in Paris and London.

The company, which employs 120 people, now processes about €1.5 billion worth of transactions each month on behalf of its clients.

It plans to accelerate expansion in the Irish and international markets by employing a further 50 staff by the end of next year.

Mr Kenny said: “The Government's unyielding focus is to make Ireland the best small country in the world for business.

"Realex Payments exemplifies the type of company that will be central to the recovery of our economy. It is a company that is at the forefront of innovation, opening new markets, increasing export sales across the globe, and securing economic growth and jobs here at home."

Mr Lyon said: "We are delighted to be here in Dublin’s Silicon Docks, as this area has become known. The new office has given us the opportunity to invest more in our learning and research development and to create a compelling workplace where people love to excel."

"Our growth over the last 18 months has accelerated significantly in the international markets and with this we need to build the team. We have several major products under development as well as plans to expand further overseas."

Welcoming the news, Labour TD Kevin Humphreys said: "This is fantastic news for the city and further strengthens Dublin's reputation as the location of choice for the online technology sector.”

"The technology sector forms a crucial part of the Government's Action Plan for Jobs, this announcement shows that not only is this plan working, but that Dublin is attracting more investment as companies want to locate where global talent is converging."

Las month, Realex announced a 28 per cent increase in revenue to €9.8 million for the year to the end of April.

It said its customer base increased to 8,360 during the year, up from 3,550 the previous year.
