AIB is to seek "operational savings" from EBS, which it took over in July, as the building society's head office functions are moved to AIB's headquarters by the end of next year.

AIB executive chairman David Hodgkinson said a joint steering group has been set up to enable integration.

"We must also avoid duplication and pool resources where possible," said Mr Hodgkinson in an e-mail to staff today.

In April AIB announced plans to shed about 2,000 jobs from its operations.
