The Republic is securing about 25 per cent of all greenfield electronic manufacturing investment in Europe, the Tanaiste and Minister for Public Enterprise, Ms Harney, said yesterday.

Opening Nepcon Ireland '99, a trade exhibition of more than 200 electronics firms at the Point Depot in Dublin, she said more than 42,000 people work for 300 companies in the manufacturing sector, in addition to 22,000 people who work for software firms.

Electronics firms generate about £11 billion in exports each year, said Ms Harney. Expenditure generated by such companies was £2 billion each year, of which purchases of Irish-made components and supplies were worth some £600 million.
