DATA Electronics Group Limited, an Irish facilities management company, is investing £33 million (€41.9 million) in a new building to house Internet and telecommunications equipment for third parties.
The 130,000 square foot building, which will be called The Dublin e-Switch, will be located close to the M50.
The investment is in response to the growing demand from telecoms and Internet companies that "require a specialist facility in which to house their mission-critical servers, routers and switch equipment", according to Mr Maurice Mortell, a director of the group.
The facility should be open by November and is being funded by a mixture of private equity and bank finance. The company claims that it can cater for all sizes of user, from Internet Service Providers to small dot com start-ups.
The Dublin e-Switch will be supplied with a very high power capacity in order to meet the exceptional power demands of Internet equipment. Once fully operational, it will use as much electricity as a small town.
The centre will also be connected to all the fibre-optic networks of the major telecommunications companies, according to Mr Mortell.
Data Electronics Group was established in 1975 and manages facilities on behalf of a number of well-known clients, including Bloomberg Financial Markets and Associated Press.
