Stocks ended mixed in New York today, as the Dow Jones industrials moved to record highs amid a return to manufacturing and basic-materials stocks.

But the Nasdaq composite index sank on profit-taking in some technology shares.

At the close on Wall Street, the Dow was up 113.12 points - or 1.06 per cent - at 10,831.71, breaking 10,800 for the first time and topping its previous record, set last Thursday, of 10,727.18.

The Standard and Poor's 500 index rose 2.75 to 1,362.79. The Nasdaq composite, which had climbed to a new high on Monday, was down nearly 50 points at 2,602.21.
