More than 32,000 companies were dissolved in 1999, an increase of 260 per cent on the previous year's figures, according to a report published yesterday by the Minister of State for Science, Technology and Commerce, Mr Noel Treacy.

The number of companies being dissolved or struck off the register has been increasing in recent years, primarily because of a campaign by the Registrar of Companies against firms that fail to file annual returns.
