California's fiscal crisis deepens

California’s fiscal crisis intensified sharply yesterday as big banks stopped accepting IOUs issued by the state to companies and individuals in lieu of cash.

Bank of America, Wells Fargo and other banks had set a July 10th deadline to accept the IOUs. Californians will now have to find other ways to convert the notes, which the state will not redeem before October. – (Copyright The Financial Times Limited 2009)
