Bullish reports boost markets

European stock markets surged yesterday on a wave of optimism about the economic outlook and continuing enthusiasm for oil and telecoms shares.

Analysts said investors were impressed by a European Commission report forecasting economic growth in the European Union would jump to 3 per cent next year from 2.1 per cent this year.
