Blue chips lead stocks higher

WALL Street stocks rose today with technology issues again leading the way as blue chips continued to trail the broad market.

The Dow Jones average of 30 industrial stocks rose 23.85 points to close at 5588.59. It has meandered aimlessly for the past few sessions, while smaller company stocks have lifted other indexes to new records.

The Nasdaq composite, heavily weighted with technology issues, moved further into record territory and has now advanced nearly 6 per cent in less than two weeks and set new records in four straight sessions.

The American Stock Exchange's market value index, which also is weighted with smaller companies and technology issues, has risen over 3 per cent in about two weeks.

The NYSE composite rose 1.79 to 349.60 and the S & P 500 rose 3.69 to 651.58. The Nasdaq composite rose 11.60 to 1,165.10. The Amex market value index gained 3.36 to 590.73.
