Bank merger talks break down

Talks aimed at resolving a bruising takeover battle among three major French banks broke down this morning, the Bank of France said in a statement. The central bank governor Jean-Claude Trichet had called in the heads of Banque Nationale de Paris, Societe Generale and Paribas for discussions at the end of last week.
